Julie, Thanks so much for giving me these details. I will discuss with my surgeon when I return at the end of July. As I researched further yesterday I discovered that this is the pre op standard. When is your surgery? Good Luck. I look forward to reading about your experience.

Hi Shelley! My surgeon has all of his patients go on a special diet for two weeks prior to surgery. It is very high protein and is between 800-900 calories a day. Plus you have to drink 64oz of water a day. The purpose of the diet is for you to lose weight before surgery, and to protein-load your system. The weight loss shrinks your liver and stomach, making laparscopic surgery easier for the surgeon. What foods do you eat on the diet? Well, it's all provided by the doctor (you pay for this out of pocket, insurance does not cover usually). Anyway, you have a choice of many items. 1 pt items: 8oz protein shakes, gelatin, pudding, various 6-8oz soups, cold fruity protein drinks and 2 pt items: protein bars, wafer cookies, soy nuts, soy snacks. Anyway, you order it ahead of time so you have it on hand, and you eat ten points a day. You are not really hungry because you're eating a lot of protein, but I feel a little tired. I lost 9 pounds in the first week. I hope that answered your question!
